We live in a scary online world where Password Management can be a “Haunting Experience.” Even scarier is the fact that we all tend to reuse the same passwords across different websites.

Passwords and management of passwords are a big pain – no two ways around it.

One website requires a symbol, another requires 14 characters, and your bank requires ten characters, four PINs, and the answer to a secret question. And due to password exhaustion, it becomes easy to use the same three or four passwords for everything – after all, that’s more secure than one password for everything, right?!

Here’s the problem with that strategy. Let’s assume that you have a Gmail account, an Amazon account, and some accounts at big-box retail stores. You use the same password on all of the sites, and you use it for the account you set up on the excellent website you found to order gift cards as client gifts – at 10% less than their value.

Don’t let an old password come back to haunt you!

Then, the gift-card website gets hacked or falls victim to an attack. Not only do the crooks get your credit card information, but they also get the list of all of the website’s users and those users’ passwords. They publish the list freely out on the Internet or sell it on the Dark Web, where other hackers are lurking to wait for credentials to exploit. Since you used the same password on all websites, these accounts are now accessible to anyone capable of doing a Google search. That’s why it’s essential to have different passwords for EACH website and application.

So what can you do?
